Richard Barham was born in Canterbury in 1788, the illegitimate son of an alderman. He was first vicar of Westwell, and then of Snargate & Wareham on Romney Marsh, before becoming a minor canon of St Paul's, and becoming the intimate friend of the great literary figures of the 1830s.
