1890: In the Worcestershire market town of Pershore, at Talbots' Lodging House, a recently arrived guest dies in mysterious circumstances. Detective Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft and his colleague, Constable Tom Crabb, are called in to investigate, and are presented with accusations that the dead man was poisoned - a theory borne out by circumstantial evidence. Then a second guest is killed: arsenic is suspected in both deaths, and the policemen's enquiries begin to unearth long-buried secrets. Meanwhile, an old case from Ravenscroft's past threatens to cast a shadow over the present...
