This major research report covers discoveries and excavations across twenty sites ranging in date through the Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, Medieval and Post-medieval periods. These include important Iron Age chieftain burials atAlkham, major Roman villas at Rodmersham and Harrietsham, an Anglo-Saxon palace at Eynsford, castles at Kemsingand Sandown (Deal) and also the Sandwich medieval ship. Several otherwise unknown Iron Age and Roman farmsteads are included, as are three Classis Britannica-related sites in Dover and two Roman sites in Rochester. Finally, sites in Madeira representing early pioneer work, are appropriately included! All twenty excavations were directed by the writer over five decades. A final chapter called Reflections, an amusing autobiographical commentary, touches on archaeological politics and "progress" over the decades. An updated bibliography (2002 onwards) is included, plus acknowledgements to many of those who assisted with the projects, both the many volunteers and core-team members.
