Once upon a time there was a bus company synonymous with a large area of Kent and East Sussex, its territory stretching from Gravesend and the Isle of Sheppey in the north down to the Sussex coast, and from East Grinstead all the way across the Weald to Ashford and Canterbury. Displaying distinctive scroll fleetnames, its dark green and cream buses were everywhere, taking people to work, to school, to the station, to the shops or just out and about to many of the attractive towns, villages and sights with which the area abounds. Similarly, its stylish cream coaches trimmed with dark green took people up to London or brought Londoners down to Kent and Sussex. Coaches also took local people off to the coast, out for the day or exploring the far corners of the kingdom on a touring holiday. That company was Maidstone & District. In this book we delve into the character of this much-loved bus company in its golden years – the two decades or so immediately after the Second World War – until it came under state ownership at the end of the 1960s. But this book is not only about buses or bus routes, even though you’ll learn a lot about those in its pages. It’s also about the places it served, the geography, history, architecture and character of those places, with several diversions along the way. It all adds up to give you a rich, tangible sense of time and place. So come on this journey with us and get to know Maidstone & District in those halcyon years.
