Oscar Isaac stars in this crime drama written and directed by Paul Schrader. While serving a lengthy prison sentence former military interrogator William Tell (Isaac) learned to count cards. Despite his talents Tell lives a lonely existence on the road as he drifts from one casino to the next, winning modest amounts and declining the financial support of wealthy investors. When Tell meets Cirk (Tye Sheridan), the son of a fellow interrogator, he decides to help the young man on his quest for vengeance against retired Major John Gordo (Willem Dafoe).
