Part local history, part memoir, Dr Martin Robards’ Born And Bred gives a unique insight into a specific part of Kent and Sussex history. Having lived on a large agricultural estate for most of his 78 years, he explores the history of the Bayham area. Robards’ father worked for the 5th Marquis of Camden, and his book traces the family from before the Lord Chancellor Camden. After extensive research, he unveils new details about the building of the 19th century Bayham Abbey, and includes fascinating material from the Bayham Estate Magazine (1930-39). Robards also gives a vivid account of his family and its longstanding relationship with the Estate, taking us from his rural childhood to his training in Paediatrics, before he settled back into the area with his wife and family. Born and Bred is not just his story, but the story of Bayham itself.
