Adolf Hitler, in 1941, decides that England must be conquered before he takes on Russia. A small village in east Kent lies in the path of a powerful German invasion force. As Churchill’s government struggles to deal with the surprise attack, the villagers of Bridge are abandoned by the retreating British army. Inspired by the captain of the Home Guard, a guerrilla warfare expert, the inhabitants mount a spirited defence against panzers and infantry. Under fire, community bonds and human relationships are tested to the limit. Ordinary people become extraordinary heroes and, in some cases, traitors. As death and destruction visit the Garden of England, love, kindness and a strong sense of solidarity survive.
