Grazia Deledda nacque a Nuoro, nella sua amatissima Sardegna, il 27 settembre 1871. Si sposò giovanissima e si trasferì a Roma. Studiò da autodidatta e all'età di 17 anni scrisse le sue prime storie, basate sui temi sentimentali e sul folklore. Deledda ha spesso usato il paesaggio della Sardegna come sfondo per descrivere le difficoltà incontrate dai suoi personaggi. Gli antichi modi della Sardegna sono spesso in conflitto con i costumi moderni, e i suoi personaggi sono costretti a trovare complicate soluzioni ai problemi morali. Nel 1926 vinse il Premio Nobel per la letteratura. Morì a Roma il 15 agosto del 1936. Cosima, romanzo autobiografico, fu pubblicato postumo nel 1937."After a week of furious wind, sleet and rain, the tops of the mountains appeared white against the black of the clouds that were lowering and disappearing on the horizon, and the village of Oronou with its reddish houses built on the gray summit of a granite peak, with its steep and rocky lanes, seemed to emerge from the fog as if it had escaped the deluge. The whole panorama, from the mountains to the coast, from the dark line of the plateau above Oronou to the thickets at the bottom of the valley, seemed to drip with water. But the village was dry;
