Once upon a time there was a child who had a pain, he never separated from it. "Pain was faithful to the child," and it was only with him that she wanted to play. The child takes care of it, feeds it, accompanies it to the edge of the small village at the foot of a mountain, in the woods, keeps it with him at school, under the table when he eats. Even the father of the child has a pain, which sometimes, without warning, breaks down the doors of the house, and howls with screams that seem to come from the center of the world. That destructive pain frightens the child and makes him feel alone: at least until he, together with his puppy, gets to know the thin girl who lives beyond the railway. Then everything takes the shape of her, her falling leaves are her hands, her passing at her level, her eyelashes fluttering, her rails, her slender legs stretched out in the grass.C'era una volta un bambino che aveva un dolore, non se ne separava mai. "Il dolore era fedele al bambino," ed era solo con lui che voleva giocare. Il bambino se ne prende cura, lo nutre, lo accompagna ai margini del piccolo paese ai piedi di una montagna, nel bosco, lo tiene con sé a scuola, sotto la tavola quando mangia. Anche il padre del bambino ha un dolore, che a volte, senza preavviso, butta giù le porte della casa, e latra con urli che sembrano arrivare dal centro del mondo. Quel dolore così distruttivo spaventa il bambino e lo fa sentire solo: almeno fino a quando, insieme al suo cucciolo, conosce la bambina sottile che vive oltre la ferrovia. Allora ogni cosa prende la forma di lei, le foglie che cadono sono le sue mani, il passaggio a livello le sue ciglia che sbattono, i binari le sue gambe sottili distese nell'erba.
