Rosa knows it well, and after her husband's death she decides to leave Milan to return to her homeland, the remote Sicilian village of Monte Pepe. Here she soon realizes that the local women (even the younger ones!) seem resigned to a monotonous grind. Yet there must be a way to brighten up the days and awaken the ambitions of the ladies of Monte Pepe. So, one morning, she gets up pricked by an idea: to open a rotisserie that offers the best arancini in the region, in a hospitable environment that attracts tourists and gourmets. Strengthened by her past as a cook, Rosa tries to involve four friends: Giuseppa, a widow a few years older than her, the twins Maria and Nunziatina, passionate about ancient tradition cooking, and the beautiful Sarina, young in search of her vocation. But immediately they will collide with an insurmountable difficulty: the town is too isolated in the mountains and customers are scarce. In the midst of these troubles, new loves are born, others end, and still others struggle to make their way. And just when the five friends begin to give up, their fate will be turned upside down by the appearance of a mysterious woman who will take them on an incredible adventure in New York.Ogni trasloco è una fine. Lo sa bene Rosa, che dopo la morte del marito decide di lasciare Milano per tornare nella sua terra di origine, lo sperduto paesino siciliano di Monte Pepe. Qui si rende ben presto conto che le donne del luogo (perfino le più giovani!) sembrano rassegnate a un monotono tran-tran. Eppure ci deve essere un modo per ravvivare le giornate e risvegliare le ambizioni delle signore di Monte Pepe. Così, una mattina, si alza punzecchiata da un'idea: aprire una rosticceria che offra i migliori arancini della regione, in un ambiente ospitale che attiri turisti e buongustai. Forte del suo passato di cuoca, Rosa tenta di coinvolgere quattro amiche: Giuseppa, vedova con qualche anno in più, le gemelle Maria e Nunziatina, appassionate di cucina dell'antica tradizione, e la bellissima Sarina, giovane in cerca della sua vocazione. Ma fin da subito si scontreranno con una difficoltà insormontabile: il paese è troppo isolato fra le montagne e i clienti scarseggiano. In mezzo a questi guai, nuovi amori nascono, altri finiscono, e altri ancora stentano a farsi strada. E proprio quando le cinque amiche cominciano a darsi per vinte, il loro destino sarà stravolto dall'apparizione di una misteriosa donna che le trasporterà in un'incredibile avventura a New York.
