The Tenterden branch of Lewis and Hyland was part of the department store chain empire founded by master draper George Alexander Lewis founded in 1834 in Ashford, Kent that became a leading name in the drapery and furnishing trade throughout Kent and East Sussex. Its founders were amongst the first pioneers of the department store that we recognise today. It was one of the Tenterden’s iconic businesses for over 140 years and its picturesque position at 68-70 High Street resulted in the early nineteenth century building appearing in scores of old photographs, postcards and paintings. The story of the shop provides a microcosm of the social and economic history of the drapery trade in 19th. early 20th centuries.
