Summary

We know nothing about the sea, but we delude ourselves to the contrary. Maybe because just below there is a life so different and amazing that it seems unthinkable and terrible. A little boy learns it the hard way, when at school he has to draw his favorite animal and the whole class laughs at him, because among the many possible ones he has chosen the giant squid, "which doesn't exist". Instead, the giant squid does exist, but it's too big and strange to imagine it real: in fact, until yesterday we considered it just a story.Del mare non sappiamo nulla, però ci illudiamo del contrario. Forse perché appena sotto c'è una vita così diversa e strabiliante da sembrarci impensabile e terribile. Lo impara a proprie spese un ragazzino, quando a scuola deve disegnare il suo animale preferito e la classe intera lo deride, perché fra i tanti possibili lui ha scelto il calamaro gigante, "che non esiste". Invece il calamaro gigante esiste eccome, però è troppo grande e strano per immaginarlo reale: infatti fino a ieri l'abbiamo considerato solo una storia.
