Se inflama ușor, schimba atitudinile ca pe cămăși, lua poziție ori de câte ori descoperea o cauză. Uneori era, pur și simplu, în căutarea atenției celorlalți. Anonimatul era o haină prea strâmtă pentru el. Recunoașterea sa ca scriitor a venit târziu, a prins ultimul tren. Dar atitudinile lui paradoxale au venit și din trăiri profunde ‒ deloc circumstanțiale –, din trecutul îndepărtat al copilului desculț, hoinărind pe malul Dunării. A nu avea nicio cauză pentru care să lupte i se părea de-a dreptul imposibil, o nefericire și o viață fără rost. Panait Istrati nu trebuie neapărat preamărit, pentru că nu a fost nici sfânt, nici Isus, nici zeu, nici sacrificat. În urma lui rămâne harul inegalabil de povestitor cu care a adus la suprafață o umanitate eternă în datele ei esențiale. A fost fascinat de omul de dincolo de timp și ne-a fascinat, la rândul lui, povestindu-l. Emoția a fost vehiculul de care s-a folosit. Umanismul lui primitiv și adânc nu l-a părăsit în nicio împrejurare. Nu s-a întors niciodată împotriva omului, deși ar fi avut de ce. He frequently disavowed himself and surprised his contemporaries with statements, adhesions and gestures to the contrary. He was "the man who doesn't adhere to anything", as he liked to say in the '30s, but he adhered to almost every cause he encountered on the way. He became easily inflamed, changed his attitudes like shirts, took a stand whenever he discovered a cause. Sometimes he was simply looking for the attention of others. Anonymity was too tight a coat for him. His recognition as a writer came late, he caught the last train. But his paradoxical attitudes also came from deep feelings – not at all circumstantial – from the distant past of the barefoot child, wandering on the banks of the Danube. Having no cause to fight for seemed downright impossible, an unhappiness and a pointless life. Panait Istrati does not necessarily need to be glorified, because he was neither holy, nor Jesus, nor god, nor sacrificed. Behind him remains the unparalleled grace of storyteller with which he brought to the surface an eternal humanity in its essential data. He was fascinated by the man from beyond time and fascinated us, in turn, by telling him. Emotion was the vehicle he used.
