Virgil Lepara, an orphan and without many prospects during the communist regime, finds his place and, in a way, a family in the structures of the Securitate. He quickly advances through the hierarchical ranks and becomes a colonel in an elite department that deals with the physical suppression of people undesirable to Ceausescu. However, immediately after the revolution, through a combination of circumstances, he becomes the only one exposed and is tried and sentenced to prison for his crimes. He gets out of prison after twenty years, during which he lost his wife and all his fortune, but he learns with surprise that a benefactor from the services took care to provide him with everything he needs in a luxury asylum in the capital. Thus, as a special retiree, he has nothing else to do but live his newly acquired and comfortable freedom. However, the benefits come with a cost, so that, in a modern and European Romania, it still depends on the moods and machinations of the service agents. At the same time, the newly formed relationships, with apparently simple people, put him in the situation of remembering his old life, and his most heinous crime seems to catch up with him and endanger his existence. A novel in which Radu Aldulescu brings to light the darkest parts of our communist past, but also the still present connections and the incredible socio-political compromises known or hidden.
