And she will constantly overcome other people's stereotypes about herself and her fellow countrymen from the Ukrainian South.This book is about what it is like to be born a Ukrainian woman in the USSR, to experience first Soviet propaganda and language discrimination, and then the bias of fellow countrymen from other regions. The family helps to create and maintain Zvonka's own identity – it is family stories and family upbringing that sow seeds of doubt in her as to whether to believe what is said at school, written in newspapers and "lied" on TV. The childhood of the main character falls on the era of the late Brezhnev and the beginning of "Perestroika", her youth falls on the collapse of the Soviet Union and the infamous nineties, and her adult life on the final formation of Independence. Having moved to Odesa, Dzvinka has to defend her otherness in a Russianized environment, and later in Kyiv and in the West of Ukraine she has to prove that she is the same Ukrainian as those who were born on the other side of the Zbruch, her native language is Ukrainian, and Ukrainians live in the Odesa region.
