Hbk.Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges was born at Wootton Court and educated at Maidstone Grammar School and the King's School, Canterbury. He lived at one time at Lee Priory, Ickham where he set up a private printing works in 1813. He was MP for Maidstone, from 1812-1818. He was an interesting character, spending much of his life trying to prove his descent from the aristocracy, his claims being rejected by the heralds. He was suspected of making entries in ancient registers to support his claims. He was permanently in debt, despite having inherited large sums. His children hatched a fraudulent plot to restore the family fortunes - and on its failure the family was disgraced.
