Sydney Herbert Bywater Harris was an adventurer, a man possessed of great courage and charm, who fulfilled every schoolboy fantasy and really did 'live the dream'. Highlights included leaving Ilford at the age of 17 for the Klondike gold rush, joining the King's Colonials Imperial Yeomanry, transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1914, flying the FE2b, commanding a fighting school, joining the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and being one of the last to leave France with the German Blitzkrieg only a few hours away during World War II.
