As the cover suggests, many of these poems are drawn directly from personal experience. Others are imagined scenarios, prompted by an appetite for the absurd. The poems are not judgmental, but use gallows humour and anecdote to reflect on the follies and triumphs of everyday living. Themes include: childhood and growing up in the 1950s; army life; jobs; the Church; politics; the man-made world; the natural world; issues of health; and ageing. The language used is plain, accessible English, with minimum risk of method obstructing message. The rhythms are such that the poems work equally well read silently or aloud as performance poetry. The author believes he was influenced by the narrative style of songs heard on the radio as a child. Book Ends is a fairground of the emotions, every poem offering a different ride.
